Bryce to Grand Canyon
Day 20 – Friday
The ladies are leaving Jason to ride his bike from the point to Red Canyon, while we stop at the Visitor’s Center to get the Jr. Ranger badges and our small prize. While there, Alice looked at me and said, “I don’t feel so good.” She was very pale and then passed out. I rarely use my “big voice” because my normal voice is loud enough, but in a matter of moments I silenced the whole Bryce Canyon Visitor Center. I had a vacationing neurologist, a nurse, and two park rangers by my side in seconds. She was moved to a medical room the size of a closet, where a Ranger Cop, Ranger EMT, and Volunteer EMT looked her over. Everyone thinks that she’s fine and it was just the high altitude taking its toll. I am a sweaty mess though.
We picked up Jason on the side of the road at Red Canyon and headed for the Grand Canyon. Alice and Violet have been talking about the gifts they want to buy their cousins and one item was “gems”. I saw a sign for “Joe’s Rock Shop” which was a series of trailers, mobile homes, and an EZ-up. I pulled in and instantly thought of the movie Joe Dirt. There were mullets, stray dogs, and it was great. The girls found their prizes, which was good for them, but I’d been hunting a coffee shop for hours. Our phones stopped working and I’d given up on that coffee, when out of nowhere a sign advertising “Espresso, Beer, and Wine” appeared. Hello, Arizona!! This shop wasn’t in a town, so I asked the barista where we were. She replied, “Where do you think you are?” The only sign for miles said, “Kaibab National Forest” so I replied with that. Turns out we were a few miles from the Grand Canyon - North Rim entrance.
All campgrounds were full, but we were handed a leaflet on “Dispersed Camping”. So…we ended up on Forest Service Road 611. It was the quietest and most peaceful camping we’ve done yet. Alice wanted to know where the picnic table went and Violet was curious about the pool. This flamingo was a gift from Aunt Dawn and Uncle Dan. It's been out at every camp site, but now it's become a toy for Barbie to play with. |
